Danny Boyle's Films Ranked From Worst To Best
1. Trainspotting (1996)
One of the most iconic films of the 1990s and with good reason, Trainspotting shines an unexpectedly hilarious, highly entertaining light on heroin addiction, while also refusing to glamorise it thanks to numerous utterly horrifying segues into the surreal.
Ewan McGregor has arguably never been better than as protagonist Renton, but the cast is top-notch across the board, especially Robert Carlyle's outrageous savage Begbie and Kelly Macdonald's precocious schoolgirl Diane.
What's most bizarre about this film about the highs and lows of drug addiction is how weirdly life-affirming it is, ably conveying why people take drugs in the first place, and how utterly absurd a sober life can be.
It's not the most pleasant sit all things considered, but utterly remarkable in every way that a film can be. Boyle has made many great movies, many more feted with awards than Trainspotting, but not one of his films has penetrated the public consciousness as pervasively as this.
