Danny Boyle's Films Ranked From Worst To Best
11. The Beach (2000)
Undeniably a total mess but at least a fascinating and entertaining one, The Beach is a rather sacrilegious adaptation of Alex Garland's acclaimed novel, wearing its themes on it sleeve and ultimately meandering its way to a fairly unsatisfactory climax.
That said, Boyle is clearly having a blast with the psychological thriller elements, his cinematic forte, and his stylistic exuberance ensures the film is never boring. Who can forget that insane video game-inspired sequence? Trippy.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton and Robert Carlyle all turn in enjoyable work here, and while it's difficult to defend the film's indulgences and sheer sloppiness, it is an interesting exercise in style over substance all the same.
