3. The Fountain

The Fountain is easily the director's most divisive film to date, receiving heavily polarised reviews upon release after a difficult production, but over a decade later, it's fair to say that it's also a film that's passionately loved by many of his most devoted fans.

A hauntingly beautiful fantasy epic set across three time periods, The Fountain is an eye-popping spectacle like nothing else and essentially Aronofsky's own personal 2001.

Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are electrifying in the focal century-spanning roles, and while you may not quite buy into everything the filmmaker hurls at the screen, the feeling and mood he creates is thoroughly intoxicating.

Plus, Clint Mansell's soul-stirring musical score is easily one of the best of the 21st century so far.
