Darren Aronofsky's Movies Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Pi

Aronofsky's fierce debut will not be for everyone, but it is an impressive testament to what a talented director can achieve on a shoestring budget.

Made for a mere $68,000, Pi is a psychological thriller revolving around a brilliant mathematician (Sean Gullette) who attempts to find numerical patterns in nature. It's a lot more interesting than that synopsis might suggest, though.

Aronofsky makes fantastic use of his constraints to make this a grimy, eerily intimate psychological thriller, shot in gorgeous black-and-white and benefiting from Gullette's impressive lead performance.

The film also sees the director teaming with many of his future frequent collaborators for the first time, namely cinematographer Matthew Libatique and composer Clint Mansell. From this low-fi effort alone, it was immediately clear that Aronofsky was headed for great things.
