David Gordon Green directing FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND

David Gordon Green (SNOW ANGELS, THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) will direct an adaptation of the Steve Niles horror/thriller Dark Horse graphic novel FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND at Overture Films. First time scribes Peter Sattler and Geoff Davey will adapt the novel for screen. Niles whose 30 DAYS OF NIGHT was transformed into a late 2007 studio horror, is also producing according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Illustrated by Greg Ruth, Niles' six-part 2004 series about the horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involves Trevor Owen's attempts to protect his "monster" of a 6-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley's other "freaks" from their parents' worst instincts.
Reading a review of the comic's first issue at Read About Comics, they say the most impressive aspect of the tale is Niles' ability to provoke an atmosphere of fear into an unknown menace. Like Gordon Green as a director but thought he mis-fired with THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS but then was that really a movie he should have ever directed anyway? Love to see what he could do with horror... especially straight laced TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE style horror.
