David Lynch: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

6. Lost Highway (1997)

lost-highway A schizophrenic Bill Pullman gets put in jail for murder and turns into Balthazar Ghetty. His Dad becomes Gary Busey and his boss is Richard Pryor (in his last film role before his untimely death), so we are set for another insane journey that spirals into another classic Lynch nightmare. This may be Lynch€™s darkest film, or least the closest you get to the horror genre €“ Lost Highway is simply a terrifying watch. The sound mix is a frightening assault on your ears and mind; static televisions, Rammstien/Trent Reznor/Bowie soundtrack (along with the usual Angelo Badalamenti fare) and heavy metal crescendos accompany this film on its dark journey. The stand out moment of this film is the appearance of the creepiest of all Lynch creations €“ The Mystery Man played by Robert Blake. With heavy red lipstick, white face and an odd knack of being in two places at once, this guy will destroy your conscious thought whilst watching and seep endlessly into your subconscious. For full effect, watch this film alone in the dark. But watch out, the mystery man is probably in your house right now.Call your house. Dial the number.
