Dawn certainly didn't have the easiest pre-production. After Rise, which was, lest we forget, placed in the unenviable August release spot, became a smash hit Fox were keen to capitalise on the resurgence of the apes. Thus the sequel was forced straight into pre-production. To original director Rupert Wyatt, for whom Rise had been a sudden promotion to the big time, there seemed little hope in getting the film finished in time to a high enough quality, so he jumped ship. To make matters worse, James Franco followed suit shortly after, leaving the film with no original human star. We now know that ultimately allowed the film to become a stronger piece of sci-fi, pushing forward in time and giving us a Caesar completely detached from the human world. However, in the finished film the answer (or even question) of Will's ultimate fate was conspicuously absent, hinted at only as far as that the majority of the human race had been wiped out; the character only appeared in the heart wrenching camcorder scene. The eagle eyed amongst you, however, will have noticed some almost-definitive proof that he fell prey to the Simian Flu. By the door of Caesar's old home is an marked X, in the film world an indication that a resident has fallen ill. R.I.P. Will.
