Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes: 7 Awesome Easter Eggs And References You Probably Missed

2. Soundtrack Easter Eggs

The soundtrack for Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is exactly what you'd expect from the maestro that is Michael Giacchino; frigging awesome. And some little franchise-specific touches only serve to make it better. Soundtrack albums are notorious for their song titles veering a little to the pun side, but Dawn takes it to a new level. The sheer number of ape puns crammed into the nineteen song titles is ridiculous, varying from the obvious (Gorilla Warfare; Enough Monkeying Around) to the ridiculous (Monkey See, Monkey Coup; The Apes Of Wrath) and even verging on morbid at times (Level Plaguing Field). There's even a track for the aforementioned cut post credit scene (Ain't That A Stinger). For a lover of puns the soundtrack offers as much joy as the actual movie (for those curious, our favourite has to be the deviously simple Planet Of The End Credits). But that's not what gets Giacchino's effort on this list. One of the key recurring motifs, an otherworldly use of percussion, is a direct throwback to Jerry Goldsmith's score for the 1968 original. Played at various points when we're with the apes, this serves as more than just a wink, giving a distinctly old school feel to the cutting edge moments.
