DCEU: 10 Changes From The Comics That Were Totally Justified

9. Superman's Use Of Lethal Force (Man Of Steel)

By far one of the most controversial aspect of Man of Steel was the lengths Superman was willing to go to in order to defeat his Kryptonian nemesis, General Zod. Sure, Supes has reluctantly taken the lives of his enemies in the comics, but to have him snap a neck with his bare hands was too out of character in the eyes of some.

Here's the thing, though: Supes had no choice but to kill Zod in the context of the no-win situation Zack Snyder had placed him in. Allowing the villain to live was signing the death warrant of the innocent people he was threatening to fry with his heat vision.

Again, this was about taking fans out of their comfort zone. Generally speaking, they aren't used to seeing Supes use lethal force but nor are they accustomed to seeing a character so powerful with the odds stacked up against him.

Having to end Zod's life clearly had an effect on Superman, a fact emphasised by the blood-curdling scream he releases immediately after. This is what happens when a character like Supes is placed in a world with more complex morality than the black and white system favoured by some of his early comic book outings.
