DCEU: 10 Changes From The Comics That Were Totally Justified

5. Ares's Secret Identity (Wonder Woman)

Wonder Woman's big twist occurred in the final act with the revelation that the villainous Ares had been hiding in plain sight all along, pulling strings from the shadows while disguised as British political leader Sir Patrick.

This is quite a departure from the comic books in which the evil Greek deity has never adopted this particular secret identity.

Patty Jenkins cherrypicked elements of traditional Ares for the movies. For instance, the villain does send warmongering thoughts to the Axis leaders telepathically, though the Sir Patrick guise was created specifically for the film.

Ares taking on human form isn't unheard of in the comics. In one story, he possesses a criminal called Ari Buchanan, and later assumes the moniker Ares Buchanan.

Given that there's precedent for Ares as a master of disguise, the creation of an original secret identity for the movie was justified, not least because it helped keep the big twist under wraps until the final act.
