DCEU: 9 New Revelations About DC's Future Movies
7. The Suicide Squad IS A Soft Reboot...
When Suicide Squad took as much money as it did, it was inevitable that we'd be getting more of the same. The film's marketing had very much framed the release as a Fans versus Critics clash and the box office haul ended up being something for them to crow about in that particular "battle," which was entirely of their own invention.
A sequel was announced and initially the shape of reporting suggested that the surviving cast would return, that David Ayer might even be directing it and that it would very much continue on from where the original left off. But then things started to change and Ayer was given other responsibilities for Warner Bros as they sought another director, including entertaining the idea of Mel Gibson for a while.
Ultimately, James Gunn's departure from Marvel presented them with an opportunity and they hired him to write (and later direct) the project. Again, some talk at the time of reporting suggested he'd be continuing on from the original film and would reuse the likes of Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Jai Courtney, but that much has apparently changed.
Gunn's deal supposedly gave him free-reign to do whatever he wanted with the "sequel" and his choice is now to softly reboot it. According to Forbes, his "script will be a new approach and rethinking of the property." Does that mean the characters we left locked up again will not be returning? Does it mean we won't get to see Gunn solving the issues of the first movie directly? Who knows at this stage, but "a new approach" sounds an awful lot like we'll see a wholesale recasting.
