Deadpool: 10 Biggest Questions For The X-Men Universe

4. Could Deadpool's Success Ever Lead To An R-Rated X-Men Movie?

The Question: Deadpool is already killing it at the box office worldwide, and is tracking to make its $58 million budget back many times over. As such, analysts are predicting and fans are hoping that it might usher in a new golden age of R-rated comic book movies aimed at adult audiences, something studios have typically been wary of in the past. And so, considering how many times it's been talked about, could this ever result in an R-rated X-Men film? The Likely Answer: Though an R-rating would make sense considering how ridiculous Wolverine's stabbing attacks look in a PG-13 movie, it's been discussed before (especially when Darren Aronofsky flirted with making The Wolverine) and shot down by Fox. The reason is obvious: for the sake of some gore (as other X-Men movies wouldn't really need the nudity and bad language of Deadpool), Fox can't justify placing a ceiling on their audience when movies like Days of Future Past gross close to $800 million. The pragmatic approach is of course to release an unrated version on home video, as happened with The Wolverine, even if it undeniably smacks of studio greed in asking fans to double-dip. But that's the best we're going to get for future movies.
