Deadpool 2: 8 Lessons It Must Learn From The Original Film

3. Don't Get Hung Up On Trying To Incorporate The X-Men Universe

Deadpool made a notable effort in trying to integrate itself, somewhat, with the already established X-Men cinematic universe... to middling results. But really, this aspect isn't all that important and will no way effect the franchise going forward if the studio - and the writers - decide to stop with all the X-Men stuff. For starters, the idea doesn't make any sense to begin with, given that the characters in the X-Men franchise can't break the fourth wall; having Deadpool do it is plainly weird. The two universes don't gel naturally, and it feels like it's too late to just throw a such a self-aware character in with other, more established characters like Professor X and Wolverine. Deadpool would have still have been as good as it was had the writers opted not to include Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead; aside from the one good joke their being there provided (when Deadpool acknowledges the lack of other X-Men characters due to the budget), they were lazily rendered and felt shoe-horned into the story, appearing to participate in fight scenes but lacking any real purpose. Deadpool 2 doesn't need to bring the X-Men universe into things; the movie can survive without incorporating aspects of that particular world.
