He might have a slight lack of backstory, but Josh Brolin's Cable is the version of the character fans have been waiting for for years. He's the perfect straight foil for Deadpool who is never victimised by his goading (mostly because he just shrugs it off as pathetic) and who bounces off him wonderfully.

He's successfully presented as a sort of Terminator figure with the same monster movie tropes that made Arnie's original so satisfying (which is why the mystery around him is necessary): he's terrifying, a real threat to Deadpool and darkly charismatic in all the right ways. Plus, his transformation into a straight hero bodes well for the other movies Brolin is attached to.

And at least the lack of real backstory could leave space for us to get a solo spin-off set in the future dealing with him as a sort of mutant police officer before he comes to the past.
