Deadpool Review: 9 Ups And 7 Downs You Need To Know

Downs...

7. Did We Really Need An Origin Story?

Deadpool is arguably a character that you could just wind up and watch go with the bare minimum of narrative raison d'ĂȘtre. Unfortunately, the film couldn't break out of the formula that superheroes in their first outings supposedly have to adhere to, where we need to see this guy get his powers. Yet whenever we flashback to Deadpool's beginnings, the film grinds to a halt and all the one-liners in the world can't stop us from wondering when we're going to get back to red-suited, red-liquid-spraying-everywhere mayhem. Because the character is so subversive, it's jarring to see him following the same-old-same-old origin story pattern. Edward Norton's The Incredible Hulk recapped his origin in about three minutes flat, and although the Hulk is obviously far more recognisable, Deadpool surely could have gone a similar route.
