Detective Pikachu: 7 Reasons To Be Excited

Is it possible to be the perfect Pikachu and the perfect Deadpool? Apparently, it is.

Some fans are already a little apprehensive to see Reynolds’ involvement. His voice is instantly recognisable as Deadpool, and even the Detective version of Pikachu is nothing like the Merc With The Mouth. Benedict Cumberbatch’s recent lukewarm Grinch proves (as if it needed proven again) that a star name and a well known IP doesn’t guarantee quality or success too.

But Reynolds offers a genuine reason to be excited. If this movie takes itself too seriously, it’ll flop harder than a tired Snorlax. Ryan Reynolds may have his detractors, but no one can accuse him of taking himself too seriously.

The truth is, Pikachu is a damn hard role to fill. We’ve grown used to his squeaky voiced ‘Pika’ cries, but even giving him dialogue to go along with that voice was never going to cut it. Reynolds is charming yet strangely patronising in almost every role he’s in - Adventureland and The Change-Up being two great examples, as well as Deadpool. That’s the vibe Detective Pikachu gives off in the trailer too, and that makes Reynolds the perfect fit.
