20 Movies That Weren't Worth The Wait

10. Borderlands

Borderlands Cate Blanchett
Lionsgate

A movie based on the hit video game franchise Borderlands began development in 2015 when Saw's Leigh Whannell entered talks to direct, though it wasn't until 2021 that the film finally started shooting under Eli Roth.

Yet it ultimately didn't release until 2024 due to the ensemble cast's busy schedules delaying reshoots, ensuring the movie's front-to-back development lasted almost an entire decade.

And while Borderlands seemed like one of the more natural fits for a game-to-movie treatment, it turned out to be a dire artistic failure in every sense of the word.

Roth's direction was absolutely anonymous, Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett were wildly miscast as Roland and Lilith - though Blanchett was clearly having fun in the role - and it overall just failed to capture the edgy, free-wheeling vibe of the games, settling instead for a milquetoast Guardians of the Galaxy ripoff.

Tellingly, co-writer Craig Mazin - best known for his work on Chernobyl and HBO's The Last of Us series - had his name taken off the script in 2023, assuming the pseudonym "Joe Crombie" instead.
