2006's big-screen adaptation of hit survival horror video game Silent Hill had many flaws, but it nevertheless marked one of Hollywood's earliest attempts to take a video game movie seriously and treat the source material with actual respect.

Director Christophe Gans didn't return for the widely panned 2012 sequel Silent Hill: Revelation, though has spent the better part of the last 20 years trying to make an adaptation of the second Silent Hill game.

Return to Silent Hill was finally released back in January, then, and the consensus from both fans of the series and more general horror enthusiasts was that Gans probably shouldn't have bothered.

The film's $23 million budget - less than half what the 2006 film cost - just wasn't enough to realise the visual atmosphere of the games, the performances weren't great, but worst of all the script was an abject mess, making baffling changes to the much-loved source material.

Considering how long it took for Gans to take another crack at Silent Hill, what a deeply woeful letdown this was from top to bottom.
