Disaster, Ben Affleck Officially Won't Direct The Batman
What now for the Dark Knight?
The DCEU just got a whole lot less interesting and a whole lot more worrying as Ben Affleck pulled the trigger on long-hinted news that he's not directing The Batman.
His statement that initially appeared on Variety seems to suggest a personal failure in balancing the directing and starring roles:
"There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
Apparently, this has nothing to do with the deeply surprising issues with Live By Night and is solely down to not having the time to give the project all it deserves.
Either way, it's a disaster. Affleck was the natural successor to Christopher Nolan (he should have made a fourth Batman in the same series, if truth be told) and though he remains as producer and star it's a chilling blow. For even the most cynical DCEU malcontents, the idea of getting an Affleck Batman movie was enough to accept any sins in the franchise that lead up to it.
The question now is where Warner abroad turn next. Matt Reeves of the Planet Of The Apes reboot series has been installed as a favourite but while he's good this job needs a bigger statement. Someone needs to get George Miller on the phone.
