Despite being betrayed by his brother, Mufasa died a very noble death because he died protecting his son. It is Simba's helplessness and disbelief when his father doesn't wake up that this moment really tugs on the heart strings, especially when he playfully bites his Mufasa's ear expecting him to open his eyes. Simba's tears and his decision to grieve underneath his father's paw makes this moment the most truly heart breaking scene in the history of Disney.
