Doctor Sleep Trailer Breakdown: 10 Things You Need To See

As mentioned, the trailer goes out of its way to showcase some of the more fantastical elements of King’s novel that it is committing to and one of these is the expansion of the mythology surrounding the shiners and their abilities.

In Kubrick’s original film, the only two shiners are Danny and Dick Hallorann and their relative abilities are mostly left (like a lot of things in that film) to the viewer’s own interpretation. We know Danny’s abilities have something to do with all of the mishaps that fall upon his family at the Overlook, we know Hallorann can sense there’s trouble brewing up there from miles away, and we know that Danny experiences the pain of Hallorann’s death alongside him. But that’s about it.

Here, the concept is being expanded quite a bit. Not only do we get glimpses of Danny talking to Abra, a fellow shiner, but he also delivers some dialogue about having met other shiner while we’re treated to glimpses of several new characters, all with “magic” or shining abilities.

In other words, this film looks to simultaneously dig deeper into what it means to shine and give a wider look at how shiners have evolved over the last forty years.
