Doctor Strange: 10 Best Moments

3. The Ancient One Dies

Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch
Marvel Studios

After Kaecillius' assault in New York, Strange sends everyone to the mysterious mirror dimension, a layer on top of our own world that cannot harm humanity.

The problem, however, is that Kaecillius is extremely powerful in the mirror dimension, and so the Ancient One shows up to help bring him down. His power is so mighty, though, that he can defeat even her, stabbing her and then hurling her through a portal, where she ends up back in New York, falling through a plate-glass window before smashing into the pavement.

She's quickly brought to hospital, where she enters her spectral form and realises that her death is imminent, talking about how she saw this moment coming but nothing past it, and how even with her heightened view of existence, she's still trying to cling to life.

It's weirdly touching and really quite haunting for a fun Marvel movie, and it no doubt helps that Swinton gives an absolutely killer performance in the role. As for whether her death is actually, totally final? We'll have to wait and see.
