Doctor Strange: 25 WTF Moments

11. Strange's Wildly Inconsistent Powers

Doctor Strange WTF
Marvel/EW

For about 75% of the film, Strange is presented as a mediocre conjurer at most: he struggles with even the most basic of spells (teleportation), his offensive and defensive spells malfunction because he literally can't get over himself and he basically stumbles to successes. He's Harry Potter, in other words.

But then, when he gets his hands on the Eye Of Agamotto, having deciphered the text relating to it - which was specifically said to be so complex only the Ancient One could read it - he can immediately master what is presented as the most powerful magic in this universe. How come the impediment of his ego doesn't affect that part of his magical spectrum?

It's so contrived it's silly - and yes, it narratively fits that he would over-reach, but it would have been so much more authentic to have him try and use the Eye and fail, drawing the attention of Kaecilius as Pippin does with the Orthanc stone in Lord Of The Rings. That way his powers wouldn't have looked so all over the place.
