Doctor Strange: 25 WTF Moments
24. When The Hell Is It Actually Set?
Now, this probably wouldn't actually be so much of a problem if it wasn't for the fact that the film-makers seem intent on confusing matters with their answers whenever the question comes up.
There are hints that Doctor Strange could be set at the same time as Iron Man 2 - the mention of the injured colonel who was paralysed in a test flight of experimental armour for instance, and the general lack of any mention of The Incident (or any sign of it in the wide shots of New York). That would have been pretty smart as it would have negated the need to wonder why the government wouldn't be more concerned about magician sightings in post Superhero Registration times.
It would also get over the fact that by the time Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Doctor Strange was already on a SHIELD watch-list. Sure, it was an Easter Egg, but why the hell would an arrogant prick surgeon be on a watch-list? And if it is indeed set in 2016, why wasn't his sudden disappearance to Tibet not cause some alarm (there's no way the government would throw out SHIELD's watch-lists when they were INCREDIBLY useful for registration monitoring purposes).
It's just dumb to set the film in early 2016, particularly as it means Strange had his accident, lost all of his money, partially healed, exhausted all medical avenues, gave up entirely, went to Tibet, trained to be a Sorceror and stopped Dormammu all in a matter of months. Why not just go with the hints it's earlier and avoid all the unnecessary probing?
