As shown in the trailers, Strange's origin is identical to the comics.
In both cases, Strange is an egotist whose arrogance and love of buying stuff (he's basically a cross between Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark). In short, he's a bit of a prick, which was made up for by his ability...
It fits that he would thrill seek - driving a silly muscle car and sniffing out cases to make him look better as he crashed too. And of course he'd speed - it fits his ego that he wouldn't listen to rules.
The long and short of it is, he ends up in a precarious position with his hands ruined.
The hand detail - which is pretty gory in the film - is slightly different to the way the comics, but the same penis-replacement-type car is present.
