For a number of years, there has been some criticism that the MCU serves up formulaic stories with similar tones and themes. This criticism was especially pronounced in Phase 2 to early Phase 3, where individual entries in the MCU were considered interchangeable.

Recent entries such as Shang-Chi with its Wuxia inspired theme and Eternals a more sci-fi epic have showcased a departure, as Marvel are giving individual directors the opportunity to have their own voice within the wider MCU.

Sam Raimi, who is most well known for being a horror movie director (outside of his involvement in the original Spider-Man trilogy), has really put his own spin on things by adding horror elements to what was already established by executive producer Scott Derrickson. This truly allows Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to be the MCU's first horror movie.

With that in mind, the potential for the wider franchise is now expanded as it is clear that the 'MCU formula' of the past is being replaced with a more director-focused approach.

This should allow for more unique stories going forward, and audiences should be excited.
