When comic book fans think of Doctor Strange, one of the first things they think of is the Orb of Agamotto. It's a powerful magical item that is used to remotely view other beings and locate where magic is being used or, in particular, detect when magic is posing a threat to the world. More often than not, it is in Strange's possession in the comics. It was, therefore, quite obviously foreshadowing the arrival of Doctor Strange when it appeared in the first Thor movie back in 2011. It was clearly visible - along with a number of other items of power, including the Infinity Gauntlet, the Warlock's Eye and the Eternal Flame - in Odin's trophy room on Asgard. Whether or not it will ever end up in Doctor Strange's possession in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is anybody's guess, but the fact that it exists in the franchise was evidence enough that he was coming - and proof that Marvel Studios have been thinking about introducing him for quite some time.
