Doctor Strange Review: 8 Ups & 5 Downs

1. Dormammu

I have absolutely no issue with Dormammu being introduced into the MCU - it's actually a great move, since he's so key to Strange's importance as a protector of Earth, but there are two pretty major issues with the way he's presented in Doctor Strange.

Firstly, he's missing his iconic, fiery design, which is about as iconic as Marvel villains come, and the replacement look is... silly at best. He might be enormous and hugely powerful (and the sequence he appears in is brilliant), but he doesn't actually look threatening enough. He's a bit... kids TV.

And then there's the fact that he's now done: the way the plot presents him makes it almost impossible for him to be a perpetual background threat to Earth and Doctor Strange, which somewhat undermines Strange's role as the Sorceror Supreme. I worry that Marvel may have written themselves into a corner and they'll need to find a villain even bigger (because sequels and escalation go together like Hulk and anger issues). DC have already been guilty of that and it didn't exactly turn out too well.
