Doctor Strange Reviews: 10 Big Things We Learned
5. Cumberbatch Is Good...ish...
Just as Marvel frequently fail with their villains, an area that they knock out of the park every time is casting their heroes. Imagining anyone else playing Iron Man, Captain America or Thor only conjures images of lesser films with flat main characters. Robert and the two Chris' are their comic book counterparts incarnate and have deservedly made them the huge cultural icons that they have become.
A few top actors were considered for Doctor Strange including the likes of Joaquin Phoenix and Jared Leto (just forget the Joker, he is good) but the general consensus was squeals of joy when baritone voiced super-sleuth Benedict Cumberbatch was cast.
Strangely, by the sounds of it, Cumberbatch does not do much to stand out among the trio of himself, Ejiofor and Swinton. Though he is not necessarily chastised by any of the reviews, with USA Today even describing him as playing the character with 'enchanting spirit and a clever wit', most reviews only refer to him along with the other two actors.
Even more worrying is how DenofGeek state he does not 'quite inhabit the character' and even that "it’s relatively easy to imagine someone else taking on Stephen Strange and doing a good job with it". Considering the quality of the rest of The Avengers' portrayals and Cumberbatch's seemingly perfect casting it stings to be told he fails to be the best thing in the film.
Perhaps it is a role he will grow into over time.
