There's definitely a feel of Batman Begins here, when Bruce Wayne goes in search of his own enlightenment in the East. I don't think that's a negative reference point for the film at all: in both cases the hero is looking for validation and purpose, following rumours to become something bigger and better.

For Strange in the comics, his world tour serves a purpose: he follows trails of rumours offering hope that someone somewhere will be able to heal his hands and restore his life as a surgeon. It's only after he follows dead ends that he learns of the Ancient One and decides to find out whether those particular rumours are true.

And kudos to the extra on the right there, shamelessly staring down the camera like it's no thing at all.
