Doctor Strange Trailer Breakdown: 25 Things You Need To See
22. Tibet
If there was any doubt of where he goes to find himself, these Tibetan Prayer Wheels should confirm it.
Incidentally, this is the setting of part of his early backstory in the comics.
Curiously, this seems to defy what Kevin Feige told Birth Movies Death about addressing the vaguely racist presentation of exotic Orientalism in the comics:
BMD: So youre removing the sorcerers from the phony Tibetan mysticism that Stan Lee used because he probably didnt really research Tibet in any real way?
Feige: Not entirely. The phony mysticism is part of what makes Doctor Strange interesting.
BMD: But are you tying it into that specific culture?
Feige: Not Tibet. Strange leaves New York in search of something and heads east.
But at least it should put aside concerns that Marvel are avoiding Tibet in order to appease the Chinese market.
