Donald Sutherland: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Nigel Honeycutt - Fool's Gold (2008)

Another film in Donald Sutherland's extensive filmography that you've either never heard of or just repressed into your sub-concious as a bad memory - Fool's Gold is as superficial as superficial films get. Boring characters, a boring plot and boring acting, the only praise critics afforded the film upon its release was that its shooting locations were spectacularly captured on camera. Sutherland plays a wealthy yacht owner in the film, and the employer of Kate Hudson's character, Tess Finnegan. Tess' ex-husband Ben (Matthew McConaughey), a treasure hunter, employs the help of Tess and her boss in an attempt to find some lost treasure trove before some almost comic book-esque villains beat them to it. Sutherland's performance is by no means the worst in the film, but there's one, single quirk about his character that just makes it cringeworthy to watch. For reasons probably unbeknown to anyone, Sutherland puts on an English accent in the film, and it's just... well, it's laughable. The film as a whole is an example of what happens when you waste some extremely talented actors, and it deserves its place in obscurity until the end of time.
