Donald Sutherland: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

1. Dr. Sid - Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)

Donald Sutherland Final Fantasy Still notable thirteen years after its initial release for being the most expensive film ever made based on a videogame franchise, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within tragically became the catalyst for Square Picture's closure and the absence of any CGI feature film based on the series since. That is, if you ignore the spectacular Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, but that film wasn't released in cinemas like Spirits Within. Donald Sutherland voices Dr. Sid,, a scientist and mentor to the film's main protagonist, Dr. Aki Ross. As is the case with many animated films, it can always be difficult to find a voice that matches an animated character, and The Spirits Within, while being a landmark in terms of technological spectacle, did little to put those concerns to rest. Sutherland was part of an all-star cast to lend his vocal cords to the film, but his performance never quite matched up with the character of Dr. Sid. The film as a whole received average reviews upon its release and barely made half of its budget back at the box office, ensuring that it would only ever be remembered by die hard fans of the games. What other films of Sutherland's have you seen that you think are absolutely brilliant or just plain awful? Let us know in the comments below.
