Donald Sutherland: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
4. Merrick - Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992)
Joss Whedon is now known the world over as the mind behind the behemoth that is The Avengers, but for anyone who didn't grow up in the 90s, he's just as well known to vampire-loving audiences as the creator of the Buffy The Vampire TV series, as well as being the writer behind the 1992 film. Unfortunately, Whedon wasn't the director of the film, so it was ultimately out of his hands when script re-writes and dialogue changes were made. Many cite this as the reason for the Buffy film being so poorly received in relation to its TV sister, and Whedon himself has stated in numerous interviews since that Sutherland in particular was a nightmare to work with due to his apparent lack of respect for the source material. How extensively Sutherland re-wrote his own lines in the film is something we'll probably never know, but what is plain to see for everyone is just how cheesy many of his lines in the film are. It's one of the actor's most phoned-in performances, and one that featured a rather large amount of nonsensical and unnecessary dialogue.
