Drew Barrymore: 5 Awesome Performance And 5 That Sucked
3. Nancy Kendricks - Duplex (2003)
With Danny DeVito behind the camera and Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore pairing up in the starring roles, the potential for a quality comedy was certainly there but something along the way went horribly, horribly wrong. The premise for Duplex - a couple find their perfect home only to discover they're getting far more than they expected thanks for a cantankerous elderly neighbour - is a familiar set up with the potential for a string of amusing set pieces and fraught performances. The end result, unfortunately, never quite manages to deliver a decent pay-off to the set-up. DeVito strives to replicate the success found in movies such as Throw Momma From The Train but the end result is tepid and formulaic. For her part, Barrymore often seems at a loss as to how to act, and one critic even went so far as to describe her as "wanders through scenes as if she has trouble remembering what day it is." Now that's a harsh critique of a performance if ever there was one.
