Drew Barrymore: 5 Awesome Performance And 5 That Sucked
2. Billie Offer - Lucky You (2007)
Churn out enough rom-coms and eventually you'll hit on a winner like The Wedding Singer, but the downside to such a strategy is that, for every sweet-natured and endearing comedy you produce there are half a dozen duds which will make even the most forgiving audience cringe. Lucky You pairs Drew Barrymore up with Eric Bana (the A-list star that wasn't meant to be) as an aspiring singer and poker player with father issues who lumber through the string of rom-com cliches in the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. Curtis Hanson (who should know better, having directed LA Confidential with such assured competence) never seems to know whether his focus is on gambling or romance, essentially stripping the latter of any real chemistry. It's partly on account of the relationship with Barrymore and Bana's characters being so underdeveloped that it feels like it never really goes anywhere. But while you could argue that Barrymore's character is sidelined, this doesn't do much to compensate for a listless performance lacking in energy or drive.
