Dumbo Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
2. The Ending Is Actually Better Than The Original
No spoilers here, but the ending to the new Dumbo is actually pretty damn great, and arguably exceeds the rather abrupt, elliptical ending of the original animation.
While the 1941 film ended with Dumbo reunited with his mother amid improved conditions for them both, the new film is far more aggressively centred around animal rights, and pays that off with a conclusion that's extremely emotionally satisfying.
In 2019 it simply wouldn't be good enough for a Dumbo remake/sequel to serve up the sudden ending of the original, so committing to something a little more definite - and yes, happier - was definitely the right move here.
As much as the film bungles some of its emotional potential, the ending is sure to leave audiences the world over ugly-crying into a pack of tissues.
