1. It's A Solid Start To A Potential Franchise
The new D&D film is very far from perfect, but on the balance of its merits it does nevertheless serve as a solid introduction to this world and the likeable characters within it.
While the movie's fate will ultimately be decided by its box office performance - on a $150 million budget it'll need to get close to $400 million to be a true hit - it certainly feels like a solid start to a new blockbuster IP, finally righting the wrong of 2000's botched effort.
Though Hollywood's attempts to make everything a tentpole franchise are exhausting, at least D&D as a property feels absolutely worthy of that treatment, and despite its flaws this is clearly a movie made with love and respect for the material.
And again, if a sequel does indeed get made, it's easy to picture it being a far more confident and literally adventurous film than this, so here's to hoping.
