Edgar Ramirez Favourite To Play Khan in STAR TREK 2?

Carlos actor will amazingly audition via Skype today or tomorrow to replace Benicio Del Toro as the sequel's main villain.

J.J. Abrams has lost out on his first choice Benicio Del Toro to play Khan (we think) in the Star Trek sequel but he has to move fast on a replacement with filming about a month away. Variety reports that Edgar Ramirez, whose amazing portrayal of Carlos the Jackal in that epic 2010 biopic has elevated him to a new ascension in Hollywood and Jordi Molla, whose face you will recognise more than the name from Colombiana and Knight & Day, are the two favourites. This is kind of amazing to report on but it's said Ramirez is favourite and has to perform his audition via Skype either today or tomorrow. From the sounds of things, Abrams has been left in such a pickle since Del Toro didn't accept the offer that he doesn't have time to fly out and meet Ramirez in person and he wants to make his decision before end of play on Friday. Kind of amazing really. Ramirez is an obvious choice given he played Carlos and Del Toro played Che Guevera and because of their backgrounds (both actors are of Spanish/Latin descent) they are regularly compared. And it also has to be said Molla appeared in the two film Che epic, which may or may not be where J.J. Abrams knows him from but I imagine Molla only gets the role if Ramirez turns it down. Clearly by the type of actors Abrams is chasing to play the main villain, he is planning something relating to Khan here. It's kind of hard to deny that now.... it's so obvious. It's a really sad thing as we thought the idea of this alternative universe was to move forward with new villains/new storylines but ALREADY by the first sequel they have gone back to Khan. Terrible idea... though Ramirez would be killer for the role... it's still something we don't want to see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRnSnfiUI54 Meanwhile, details about Peter Weller's part in the new film seems to be developing. /film have dug up some information that points to him playing a C.E.O. bad guy of some kind with relation to the main evil threat but there's no word on whether or not this will tie in to Star Trek: Enterprise where he had a memorable guest spot as a villain. The only other new casting is Alice Eve for an unspecified role. J.J. Abrams puts Star Trek 2 into warp speed of filming in January and it will hit 3D theatres on May 17th, 2013.
