Edgar Wright: 10 Moments That Prove His Utter Genius

7. Reality TV Zombies

This one was something I had missed on my first viewing of Shaun of the Dead. It's hard not to miss it after being hit with so much awesome over the previous 90 minutes. After our hero, Shaun, has saved the day, he wakes up to watch some television with his girlfriend, Liz, but finds nothing worth his while. What we didn't focus on at first was exactly what he was flipping through -- reality tv, except better, except with zombies. What do you do with the undead after you squash the outbreak and return society back to normal? Finish killing them off? Hell no, who has the time and the stomach for that gore -- you turn them into reality tv stars. Loved ones trying to reconnect with their undead loved ones on daytime talk shows, reality competition shows featuring zombies, the undead being used to clean up the mess they caused -- this is all shown to us in the span of a few seconds. The scene culminates with a newscaster priding himself on his calling of the disaster. It€™s hilarious but operates on a deeper level -- a level that shows just how vapid our €œreality€ tv and for that matter, the €œstars€ of those programs, truly are.

I'm married and live in New York with my wife and pets. I'm a writer and definitely not a comedian (just ask my wife). I've successfully linked my twitter, goodreads, facebook and google+ pages although the successful aspect of all that is up for debate. I also started my own blog on wordpress and have just finished my first novel, The Violent Winds. Now it's time to try and trick some unsuspecting fool into buying it.
