Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

If you look carefully, all the characters in the film€™s opening credits all appear at different points in the film as zombies. For instance, Mary the checkout girl ends up in Shaun€™s back garden and the listless youths take a bite out of Phillip when they attempt to get in the Jaguar. This, and the all the background hints at a zombie apocalypse the day before it actually happens is a reference to the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, where background moments similarly come into play within the main story. Wright also explained that this happens when Ed explains their binge-drinking plans after Liz dumps Shaun, inadvertently giving away everything that€™s going to happen tomorrow using drinking terms. He refers to €˜Bloody Mary€™ the checkout girl, €˜a bite at the King€™s Head€™ which is similar to what happens to Phillip, €˜having a couple at the Little Princess€™ €“ David, Di and Liz. He then says they should staggering back to bar for shots, which can be read as impersonating zombies to get into the Winchester before the shooting begins.
