Encanto Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. It's Probably Going To Win A Deserved Best Animated Film Oscar

While the Oscars are still many months away, you can probably make a pretty safe bet now that Encanto will end up winning the Best Animated Film Oscar.

Though it certainly faces competition from Pixar's Luca and Netflix's The Mitchells vs. The Machines, given that Luca's reception was more broadly positive and released much earlier in the year, its chances don't feel quite so hot.

As terrific as The Mitchells vs. The Machines is, the typical Netflix bias combined with the film's more hyperactive style will ensure older Oscar voters won't be quite so charmed by it.

Encanto conversely ticks all the awards-friendly boxes yet without being a soulless, hollow piece of work - it's a beautiful movie that's teeming with great ideas even if not everything totally works.

It's difficult to imagine the Academy not rewarding it next year, basically.
