Ennio Morricone's 10 Greatest Film Soundtracks

2. The Untouchables

Another entry from Brian De Palma's filmography, The Untouchables was a highly successful crime drama involving a group of lawmen teaming up to take on the mob in America's prohibition era.

The film boasts brilliant performances from every member of the cast - particularly Kevin Costner and Robert De Niro - an engaging narrative which gets you to root for the protagonists and last but not least, a grand soundtrack to tie it all together. It continued Morricone's wave of success in the latter half of the eighties, showcasing that he could move beyond the Western genre.

There are many different elements that make the music of The Untouchables so memorable, most notably the rousing way it opens the film as well as the way it accompanies the tension as the police close in on Capone's cronies.

The team feels like a closely-knit group of individuals thanks to the music underpinning their efforts with a heroic tone that endures throughout. It's rounded off by a sweeping and determined flourish to go alongside the police force as they work to bring down Al Capone, culminating in his downfall. What Morricone does is make the production that much more thrilling to watch.
