Though somewhat touched on in the film, Enola's disguises in the book go far beyond an exchange of clothes. Like the classic Sherlock, she has many of her own personas to fit different situations. In the books, she makes use of prosthetics, makeup, hairpieces, and other tools to hide or obfuscate her features, at one point even tricking Sherlock himself.

Some of her personas include young secretary Ivy Meshle; the shy child-bride Mrs. Ragostin; as well as Sister of the Streets, a religious sister of charity going out at night to give to the poor. Her disguises as a gentlewoman, to contrast her own gawky, teenage self, were especially effective, at one point even fooling Sherlock himself.

There were many intriguing lessons about how disguises worked that apply even in a real world context, from Enola changing the way she walked and held herself, to the way even small details like beauty marks and makeup emphasising different parts of the face could throw off someone's recognition.

Apart from her skill as a codebreaker, the detail Enola put into her disguises was impressive, especially for someone who was fourteen years old, and entirely alone, in the heart of London.
