21. The Many, Many Exposition Dumps
By far one of the biggest complaints from critics has been the film's overabundance of exposition, as is made evident from an opening title crawl that moves up the screen at a snail's pace and feels like it goes on forever. Star Wars this ain't.
Much more problematic are the many expository asides throughout the film. While a lot of characters and mythological elements need to be explained here, there's desperately little tact or grace to be found in how the script does it.
More often than not we're basically made to sit through a mini-lecture on a given character or subject, sometimes accompanied by some neat holographic visuals but almost always feeling like an extremely lazy way to convey the information.
Considering that co-writer-director ChloƩ Zhao cut her teeth working on quiet indie movies that had no time for excess dialogue, she was clearly a bit out of her depth working with a canvas this comparatively massive.
