Eternals: 24 WTF Moments
20. The MCU's Terrible First "Sex Scene"
Much was written prior to the film's release that it would feature the MCU's first "proper" sex scene.
Some saw it as a welcome announcement given the endless justified complaints about the MCU being "sexless," even as many others asked why 99.9% of superhero movies need sex scenes at all?
Well, Eternals gives us one anyway, and it's not good.
To call it a sex scene is pretty generous, really: we see Sersi and Ikaris kiss, and cut to about 20 seconds of the pair laying naked on the ground and kinda-sorta going at it.
Except, this being a PG-13 movie that doesn't want to risk embarrassing parents, there's less excited gyrating than there is a man laying on top of a woman while they awkwardly stare and declare their love for one another.
It's about as anodyne and, yes, sexless as sex scenes get. Nobody's asking for graphic nudity in an MCU movie, but when the scene in question is this tame and adds so incredibly little to the relationship in question, why even bother? Better yet, why hype it up at all before release?
