Eternals rewrites a lot of human history both ancient and more recent, in the latter case revealing that inventor Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) effectively caused the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Earlier on, we see a flashback to Phastos devising a steam engine for humanity, but Ajak (Salma Hayek) tells him that it's simply too soon in human advancement for them to handle such a creation. And so, he changes it to the noble plough.

But later we cut to 1945, where Phastos is at ground zero for the Hiroshima bombing, as he opines that human beings aren't worth saving and basically decides to walk away from them.

Phastos clearly harbours a lot of guilt over the bombings, and while he isn't explicitly blamed for the incidents, the implication is that humanity's path of advancement was guided by Phastos, so his feelings of responsibility are understandable.

The scene has already raised a lot of eyebrows online, some feeling that it was a tasteless step too far to invoke such catastrophic real-life events in a silly superhero movie.
