Eternals Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

5. The Entertaining Ensemble Cast
The script may not give them enough, but Eternals' large ensemble cast of heroes absolutely deserves credit for keeping the film as watchable as it ultimately is.
As de facto protagonist Sersi, Gemma Chan is especially solid here, while Barry Keoghan is an easy dramatic highlight as the tortured Druig, and Kumail Nanjiani brings well-placed comic relief as superhero-Bollywood star Kingo.
As by far the youngest member of the cast, Lia McHugh brings as much dimension as possible to the thinly-written part of ever-young-looking Sprite, Richard Madden is steely-good as the Superman-like Ikaris, and Brian Tyree Henry delivers the sardonic goods as the MCU's first openly gay superhero, Phastos.
There's no denying that some characters are better-served than others - Angelina Jolie's Thena makes a strangely soft impression, and Kit Harington's role as Dane Whitman is much smaller than expected - but overall the cast absolutely delivers all you could expect from the material.
