Eternals Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

4. It Has Game-Changing Implications For The MCU

The moment-to-moment writing may be disappointing, but there's little denying that Eternals is one of the most ambitious MCU movies to date in terms of pure concept and scope.

The film has much to say about the creation of Earth, the future fate of humanity, and the general packing order of the universe, and while these considerations are often wrapped around more typical fantasy shenanigans, they're still the best part of the movie.

By rewriting the history of the world in a bold and inventive way, the MCU has received a substantial update to its mythos which has potentially tectonic implications for the future of the franchise.

It of course remains to be seen whether or not subsequent MCU movies will dig deeper into this (especially given the divisive response so far), but the seeds have most certainly been sewn for future stories and conflicts.

Perhaps most bravely of all, the film also re-contextualises Thanos' (Josh Brolin) most tyrannical actions in a fascinating and surprising way - albeit one not all fans are likely to agree with.
