13. Howard Lovecraft And The Frozen Kingdom

2016 Comic Book Movies
Shout Factory

It would be fair to say that the animated adaptation of the strange but intriguing graphic novel story of young Howard Lovecraft's life flew under the radar. It went straight to home release in most territories, and you'd be forgiven for thinking the glimpse into Lovecraft's horror-filled universe was a conscious attempt to recapture the exact spirit of the exceptional ParaNorman.

It's nowhere near as successful: some of the animation is engaging enough and the character designs are cute and colourful, but it's an extremely odd project to even exist and the overall aesthetic isn't really up to other competitiors. It wasn't ever going to really appeal to Lovecraft's core of fans, because it so weirdly reinterprets his work for a more accessible position.

Add to that poor voice acting from the younger cast members (not Ron Perlman, he's great in everything) and you have a vaguely distracting, not that satisfying take on the graphic novel that feels way too awkward to exist.
